Our Mission

Early Childhood Learning and Parenting Success

Habitot Children's Museum is the East Bay's award-winning hands-on discovery museum for very young children. Over 600,000 people have enjoyed the museum's interactive exhibits, art programs and classes since its opening in 1998. More than a place to entertain young children, Habitot provides resources and support for early childhood learning, parenting success, and community connection. Habitot's Family Outreach Program brings over 10,000 low-income and at-risk children into the museum every year. Low income family participation exceeds 12% of audience though active teen parent, caregiver support and diverse family programs. Free admission days welcome over 7,000 visitors.

"The mission of Habitot Children’s Museum is to nurture and enrich the lives of young children, their families, and the adults who care for them by providing an environment for early childhood learning and exploration, parenting education, and community outreach."
—Habitot Children's Museum, Board of Directors

CORE VALUES

  • Creativity, discovery and curiosity are cultivated through hands-on exhibits and programs which foster a passion for lifelong learning
  • Children and the adults most important in their lives -- parents, teachers, and caregivers -- need child development knowledge, parenting support and places to come together in shared interaction and dialog with other adults caring for children
  • Wholesome, safe and welcoming environments build inclusive communities by supporting families, enhancing educational opportunities and creating shared vision
  • Creating a sense of belonging for children and families in their communities is at the heart of social capital
  • Our goal is to help all young children reach their potential— by interacting with engaging, hands-on exhibits, by experiencing creative programs, by fostering parent involvement and by providing diverse social opportunities
Habitot is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization that relies on tax-deductible donations for its existence. Admissions, memberships and other earned revenue cover only half of operational costs.
