This unique art program engages young children in creative
exploration, builds cognitive and physical skills, and supports
parents in guiding their children's development through the
arts. Our approach to preschool art is based on the belief
that very young children need meaningful art experiences --
ones that are both authentic to the child's emerging sense
of self and valuable to their growth and development. And,
as a parent of a 2-year old says,
"Art begins at Habitot!"
Visit our Drop-in Art Studio
Over the past nine years, more than 600,000 people have visited
the museum's Drop-in Art Studio and participated in hands-on
art activities from clay work to painting on the washable
wall. Hundreds of families have participated in Family Art
Days or attended parenting workshops designed to foster children's
development through art. Hands-on

Artist Stories
We offer daily drop-in art activities and seasonal
or multicultural art projects. The studio features a large
paintable wall surface, several multipurpose tables for: clay
and sculpture work, collage, paper mache, and recycled art
constructions. The studio is staffed full-time with experienced
art educators. Young children develop skills which include
hand-to-eye coordination, shape, symbol and pattern recognition
(pre-literacy skills), color recognition, fine motor control,
as well as creativity and self-expression.
