African Village Exhibit Fundraising Reaches 30% of Goalwawi graphic

Over 125 people attended Habitot's "Taste of Africa" fundraising event on July 18, raising hopes and funds for an experiential African village exhibit children and families. Attendees generated just over $1,000 in ticket sales, vendor proceeds and silent auction bids while enjoying authentic East African cuisine, children's games and crafts and awesome African dance performances.

Community donations so far have raised an additional $1,000. Former Board President Kathy Eyre has committed $1,000 as a challenge gift which we need to match with additional donations from members and supporters. We are a third of the way to our goal of $10,000 which we hope to raise by the end of September for an early 2011 exhibit opening.

Look ahead for on-line auction of African arts and crafts!

Habitot To Assist UC-Berkeley Child Development Researchchild development

Graduate students working with Professor Alison Gopnik in UC-Berkeley's Department of Psychology are studying child development at Habitot!

Using simple games, puppets and boxes that light up, they learn how children 2 to 7 years old understand cause and effect. Children of visitors may participate in 15-30 minute research sessions in Habitot's conference room every Friday in August.

For your participation, you'll receive a completion certificate, sticker, or small toy in appreciation for participating in addition to $1 off each admission to Habitot (or a $1 off coupon for members to share with others).

If you have questions about the research, you may call the Gopnik Child Development Lab at (510)-643-2172 or Professor Alison Gopnik (510)-642-2752.
