Habitot-Project Joy Training Wows Educators Project Joy logo

Waldelia Gardner from Brookside Head Start, Richmond, shared her thoughts after the June 27-28 training retreat for 30 preschool teachers, “I’ve been teaching for 20 years, and been to lots of trainings, and this was the first one I’ve been to that put preschool teachers first!” Teacher feedback about the rejuvenating value of the retreat was extraordinary.

Habitot staff coordinated the presentation of the first West Coast “Preschool Playmaker Basic Training” training developed by Project Joy, a training that is designed to re-activate joy and playfulness in teachers working with vulnerable children exposed to trauma. With underwriting support from the Life is good Kids Foundation, the teachers, who were selected by Habitot, received full scholarships to participate. Habitot recently received a grant from the Trio Foundation to follow up with teachers over the next year. Planning has already begun for the 2010 training retreat.

9th Annual Early Childhood Safety Campaign State Farm logo

Once again, State Farm Insurance Companies has generously stepped forward to sponsor Habitot's Early Childhood Safety Campaign, May – September. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, preventable accidents are the #1 cause of injuries and loss of life in 0-6 year old children.

A series of events from car seat checks to choke-saving demonstrations will increase visitors’ knowledge and skills to prevent toddlers’ accidents and injuries. This year, State Farm has funded a 40-hour car seat technician training for a Habitot staff member and free admission for visitors during all safety events. Back to School - Online Auction Project Joy logo

Habitot’s “Month of Valentines” online auction in February and “Mother’s Day” online auction in May raised nearly $2,000 for museum programs. A third online auction, “Back to School,” is planned for September and we hope it will be the biggest one yet.

The September auction will feature teachable skills and services from the community, including those donated by members and visitors. Know how to rebuild a fence, set up accounts on Quickbooks or bake a wedding cake? Donate one to four hours of your time teaching someone else your special talent. Your talent will be sold to the highest bidder and is a great, non-cash way to support Habitot.

If you would be willing to help solicit auction items or help organize the auction, our volunteer committee will have its first meeting in July. Please email Lauren at dassoc@habitot.org or call her at 510-647-1111 x31 for details.

Habitot thanks these generous local businesses for donating to this year’s auctions. Please patronize their businesses and let them know you appreciate their support of Habitot!
