Activity

Melted Crayon Nebulas

Kid made Melted Crayon Nebulas

Materials

  • End pieces of wax crayons
  • Wax paper
  • Small paper plate
  • Aluminum foil (for protecting pan or griddle)
  • Wooden spatula
  • Cheese grater

Directions
  1. Grate each color crayon into a small bowl (adults, some children)
  2. Fold a piece of wax paper in half and place it open with one half on a small paper plate
  3. Let children sprinkle different colors on that half of the wax paper (not too much!)
  4. Fold the paper over the shavings, quesadilla style
  5. Place the paper plate on a foil wrapped skillet or griddle and set on low on the stove.
  6. Let children watch what happens as the crayons melt. A wooden spatula pressed on the top half of the wax paper can be used to spread the melting wax.
  7. Let cool completely. Hold up to the light to see wonderful "nebula" patterns. You can also cut them out and frame them or hang them in a bright (but not direct sunlight) window.
PLEASE TAKE PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID BURNS NEAR STOVE.
SUPERVISE CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES.
