Contra Costa Libraries Join Outreach Efforts membership logo

For many years, Habitot has placed permanent admission passes in community libraries so that low-income families and others (with a library card) have free access to Habitot. Thanks to an anonymous donation, seven new libraries in Contra Costa towns have joined our outreach efforts. They include: Antioch, El Sobrante, Hercules, Pinole, Pittsburg, Martinez and Crockett.

The library's new online system will let seven families a month will be able to download free family visit passes from the libraries.

Passes for many other venues are available through their network. http://ccclib.org/

As an unemployed single parent with a 10 year old, I was thrilled to hear about Discover and Go. It's a fantastic opportunity to get my son and his friends to educational venues that are fun, which I would not have otherwise been able to afford. A big thanks for Contra Costa libraries for coordinating this resource.

We Need Donations of Your Child's Outgrown Clothing

girlHabitot will be hosting a children's clothing drive between March 20 - April 2, 2011 to benefit Acara Mia's Closet. Acara Mia's Closet is a non-profit organization that provides clothing for children in need at no cost to the families. They work directly with homeless shelters, foster care agencies, and other non-profits that provide services to children in need, including many of Habitot's community partners.

If you have new or gently-worn clothing in your child's closet, sizes 0-9, please bring and put them into the collection bins on site or visit: www.acaramiascloset.org

First 5 Funding Under Threat Again

First 5 logoFor the third time in the last few years, politicians desperate to close budget gaps are threatening to take away the twice-voter approved funding for early childhood (First 5) raised from taxes on tobacco (Prop 10).

A grant from First 5 Alameda County is Habitot's single largest source of community support. It underwrites 10% of our budget and dedicated access and support programs for the children and parents of teen parent agencies, homeless shelters, organizations serving special needs children and a host of other at-risk families in Alameda County.

Habitot's program serves an average of 900 participants each year. Many other beneficial organizations rely on First 5 funding as well. Please call or write your elected representative and senator about protecting First 5. www.savefirst5kids.org

Community Open House Celebrates Lotus Bloom

Lotus Bloom logo The community is invited to celebrate Habitot's collaboration with Lotus Bloom at an Open House and Family Fun Night at 2000 Park Blvd. Oakland, on Tuesday, March 29, from 4:30 - 6:30 pm.

Habitot's Back to the Farm exhibit is installed there this spring, thanks to an anonymous foundation, and dozens of families are participating in weekly Habitot-inspired art, science, play activities for parents and children, thanks to the Trio Foundation.
