New Visit Time for Special Needs Children butterfly graphic

"Butterflies" is a new program at Habitot for children 0-7 with special needs. Please help spread the word about our exclusive visits of hand-on play, social interaction and lots of fun in the afternoons, planned for every other month, beginning November 17, at 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm. (We are seeking funding to expand the program!)

Butterflies events will be limited to just ten families to ensure a safe, calm and supportive environment and preregistration is required.

The cost is $16 per family, siblings welcome.

For more information, contact Rachel at 510-647-1111 x16 or parented@habitot.org

To register, call Lydia at 510-647-1111 x14.

Small Grants Make a Difference

Recently, Habitot received $3,000 from the Open Circle Foundation to implement "Art for Earth's Sake" activities in the Art Studio (see this month's Habitot at Home activity). Once a month, a special art activity will be presented in the Art Studio featuring organic and natural materials or ancient processes for creating art.

Another gift of $2,000 from the Lowell Berry Foundation will add several after-hours events for formerly homeless families living in transitional housing. Parents and children will enjoy free and exclusive time in the museum in the afternoons, with staff support around play and learning, and giveaways like books, clothing and other donated items from the museum community. Each participating family will be eligible for a subsidized membership as well.

Finally, Mechanics Bank is underwriting the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on November 2 (see calendar of events). The $1,000 gift will be used to pay artists and performers as well as defray the cost of free admission for everyone who visits that day. Thank you, donors!

Year-end Giving Keeps Habitot Programs Strong

Habitot's heart graphic Habitot depends on community and individual gifts to sustain our programs, improve our exhibits and most importantly, extend access to the Museum to vulnerable children and families. Our Family and Community Partnerships Program continues to be the hardest hit in this economy, with no grants in place to support subsidized memberships for low-income families, free and discounted visits by Head Start schools and other centers, and monthly free admission days. Please give what you can in this year's appeal for support (all donations are tax deductible) so that Habitot benefits the widest possible audience.

Welcome to a New Board Member board graphic

Yanira Gonzalez Wong, Legal Director for Yahoo! Inc. has joined Habitot's board of Directors. A new member of the museum, she will be in position to keep an eye on Habitot's potential legal liabilities and exposures and will advise the board when legal representation is necessary. Welcome aboard!

 Fall Board Activities Strengthen Habitot

The expansion of the board of directors in the past year (open positions still exist) is critically important for Habitot's stability and growth. The board is beginning Habitot's third phase of strategic planning this fall - previous strategic planning documents have guided Habitot's growth in five-year cycles over the past decade.

This time around, the board is seeking input from vested staff, long-time donors, community partners and multiple-year members. Carty Consulting has offered pro bono services to facilitate the strategic planning work. If interested, please contact Executive Director, Gina Moreland at habitot@lmi.net
