Parent Support Groups

Two FREE, drop-in support groups -- Mamas & Papas (for LGBTQ families) and Caregiver Cafés (for nonparental caregivers) -- will be offered on a monthly basis in 2010, thanks to a grant from First 5 Alameda County with support from Peet's Coffee & Tea and Casa Latina in Berkeley. Supervised activities for young children 2-4 years old are held concurrently. Each month's meeting date and time is posted in the sidebar of the current issue of Tot-Mail

Monthly meeting space is also available on Tuesday mornings for Parent-to-Parent Cafés so that other parent support groups can meet -- multiracial families, parents of twins, single parents and others on request -- for a nominal fee. For an additional charge, trained parent education facilitators can be contracted through Habitot to lead these groups and discussions on topics of need/interest. Our Parenting Education staff can help you design a support program suited to your needs.

To receive email updates about Mamas & Papas, Caregiver Cafés, or to inquire about starting a new Parent-to-Parent Café, please contact us at 510-647-1111 x 16 or parented@habitot.org

Parent-to-Parent Communication
Wednesday, November 10, 17 & 24, 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

From the moment of a child's birth, the communication skills between parents are put to the test. Each person brings his or her own thoughts, feelings and ideas to the task of parenting along with her or his own individual upbringing. It is no wonder that when faced with the momentous (and sometimes daunting) challenge of raising a happy & healthy child, parents frequently find themselves overwhelmed and at a loss around how to work together. Come meet with other parents to share your concerns, ideas and questions in this parent support group (one or both welcome).

Facilitator: April Edinger Hamilton, MFT, is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and has been working in the field of early childhood mental health for over 10 years. She is currently employed at West Coast Children's Clinic in Oakland and also has a private practice in Albany. Her approach to working with children and families is based in attachment theory as well as play-based learning.

FREE with registration 510-647-1111 x 14.

Childcare available in Museum for $10/per child; $7.50 for siblings.
