- inexpensive white wool yarn
- 4 oz. alum (find with pickling spices, or use styptic pencil or deodorant rock)
- 1 oz. cream of tartar
- 1 red cabbages
- the outside skins of 3 - 4 yellow onions
- large pot
- 2 foot long sticks
- interesting leaves, feathers, grasses, flowers ... etc.
- Wash the wool in soap and water, rinse and let dry
- Dissolve the alum and cream of tartar in 4 gallons of water and heat to boiling
- Immerse the wool in the water and boil gently for 1 hour. Leave in water over night
- Prepare the dye: for purple, chop 1 red cabbage into pieces and simmer. For brown, in a separate pot, place 3 to 4 yellow onion skins in water and simmer.
- Rinse the wool and submerge a portion of the wool into each of the pots of dye.
- Simmer the wool in the pots of dye on low heat for about an hour or until you like the color.
- Remove the wool, rinse thoroughly and dry in the shade.
- To weave with the wool, cut a dozen or more lengths about 18 inches, bring the two ends together and loop the other end over a stick, insert the end pieces, pull them through and draw tight. Repeat this 5 more times across the stick. Tie the loose ends to the other stick spaced evenly. Tie another length of yarn to the ends of the first stick so that it can be hung up.
- Assist your children as needed in weaving natural materials in and out of the yarn strings to make a woven wall hanging.
