Taking Habitot Outdoors: New Collaboration Helps Children Explore Nature Child Explors Nature\

Children’s imagination, mental and physical health, and creativity flourish when given plenty of opportunities to play in the outdoors. This fall, Habitot will offer two outdoor ‘play in nature’ days which are part of a broader community effort by the Bay Area Play Coalition to restore free play to children’s homes, schools, and neighborhoods.

The Coalition is an outgrowth of the 2008 Play Symposium that was co-sponsored by Habitot. Hooked on Nature will lead free nature walks for toddlers and their families on UC Berkeley campus. Click here for class description.

Habitot desires outdoor space in any future museum facility. If you would like to join our site committee to aid in the search for a larger space with outdoor capacity, please contact Gina Moreland at 510-647-1111 x11, or at habitot@lmi.net.

The silver lining in this economy is that more commercial real estate is being offered for sale, and at more reasonable prices, than at any time in the last ten years.

Habitot’s relocation and expansion plans which have been on hold since 2007, could be resurrected with community interest and involvement. Several promising properties have been identified.

If you are interested in joining the effort to secure a larger and more accessible space for Habitot, or just to hear more about the idea with no obligations, please contact Executive Director, Gina Moreland at 510-647-1111 x 11, habitot@lmi.net.

Invitation to Participate in UC-Berkeley Infant Study UC Berkeley Infant Studies Center logo

Habitot parents with children ages 7-20 months are invited to participate in research on crawling and emotion at the Infant Studies Center at UC-Berkeley. Research hopes to uncover how infants’ perceptions and behavior change with the onset of locomotion. The study observes infant behavior in the “Moving Room” and the “Visual Cliff.”

Parents remain with their babies the entire time and may actively participate in the study. Each session lasts one to one and half hours and typically concludes with a brief locomotor assessment and a developmental questionnaire. At the end of the study you will receive a baby diploma and a small keepsake.

If you are interested in participating, or have any questions, call 510-643-0614 or email babycenter@berkeley.edu. Please include your full name and your phone number in emails.
