September is eScrip Sign-up MontheScrip logo

Want to help support Habitot but don't have a lot of cash? EScrip is a great way to generate needed funds for Habitot's exhibits, programs and community outreach - at no cost to you!

How it works: participating merchants donate to Habitot a percentage of the value of your purchases -- some organizations are able to generate thousands of dollars each month because so many families sign up. more info

Jessica Evans, a Habitot member will come in Mondays and Wednesdays, September 8 - October 6 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm to help you with EScrip registration. You can sign up anytime, of course, just ask for a registration form at the front desk or register online at https://secure.escrip.com/jsp/supporter/registration/step1.jsp

Two FREE Car Seat Inspection Events

car seat As part of our 2010 Early Childhood Safety Campaign sponsored by State Farm Insurance, Habitot will host two off-site car seat inspection events, one in Alameda and one at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland.

Why have your car seat inspected? Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that as many as 80% of all car seats are improperly installed. It's a significant factor in why automobile accidents are the number one killer of children under 14. The great difficulty in installing car seats has always been the limitless variety among car seats, vehicle seats and seat belt design. Getting a good fit between car seat and vehicle almost always requires a trained technician who can deal with the literally thousands of combinations. Please see our events listing for dates, times and locations of the two FREE car seat inspection events.

Thanks to State Farm Insurance Companies for supporting Habitot's 2010 Early Childhood Safety Campaign.

Ada's Book Give-aways Begin this MonthA Gift from Ada graphic

Long time employee, Ada Spanier, will turn 90 years old this month! In celebration of her nine decades and counting (one and a half of them working at Habitot!), she plans to distribute a FREE book to every child who visits Habitot on the second Tuesday of every month, beginning September 14th, from 9:30-10:30!

" Every child should have books of their own," says Ada, "and being read to in the early years is so important for literacy and parent-child closeness." She's collecting books from local libraries and book stores and welcomes your donations.

Review Habitot in the list of 2010 Great Non-Profits Great Nonprofits logo

Help Habitot receive exposure to potential donors and supporters nationwide through the 2010 GreatNonprofits Top-Rated Education Nonprofits List.

We need to receive at least 10 positive reviews (4 or 5 stars) by September 30, 2010 to gain recognition for our work -- teaching, offering education resources, and supplementing learning programs. All reviews will be visible to potential donors and volunteers. It's easy and only takes 3 minutes!

Habitot Welcomes New Board Memberboard graphic

Habitot is delighted to welcome Jeff Evans to Habitot's Board of Directors.

Mr. Evans is a LEED certified architect with HKIT Architects and describes himself as a "synthesizer," able to make connections and pull people and resources together from various fields. "Habitot is very important to my family," says Jeff. "My desire to join the Board is rooted in wanting to give back to something that has given so much to my family and to make sure others have the opportunity to know Habitot like we have." Welcome aboard, Jeff!
