Parent Support Groups

Mamas & Papas (for LGBTQ Families)
with Our Family
Wednesday, September 7, 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Join our free, drop-in support group for gay and lesbian families and their 0-5 year old children, presented in partnership with Our Family. While parents engage in lively and supportive conversations facilitated by Habitot and Our Family staff in our classroom annex (Habitot, Too), children play (with supervision) in the Museum.

Caregiver Cafe
Monday, September 19, 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Share some coffee and pastries, connect with other caregiving professionals and talk about the fun and challenges you face in raising others' children. Habitot staff will occupy your charges at nearby tables with art activities and puzzles while you take part in a facilitated group discussion. We hope to bring in outside experts to share their expertise on topics of interest. Free museum admission for all attendees following Caregiver Cafe let's you put new ideas into action.

Mindful Parenting
Thursday, September 29, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

All parents want to raise happy, secure and loving kids. The good news is that there are proven parenting methods that will help you succeed. Local psychologist, mom, and parent coach, Dr. Erica Reischer, will lead this free, interactive workshop that will touch on:

  • The ABCs of positive parenting: Acceptance, Boundaries, Consistency
  • 10 things great parents do
  • How to redirect challenging behavior
  • Why poorly worded praise can undermine kids’ motivation and achievement
       and what to do instead
  • How to help your kids manage stress, disappointment and other intense emotions
  • The importance of cultivating gratitude and other happiness habits in your family

  • Facilitator:
Erica Reischer, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and parent coach. She has published several articles on optimal functioning, the mind/body connection, cultural difference, and children/adolescents in prominent journals. Through individual consultations and group workshops specifically for families of young children, her work with clients is both compassionate and pragmatic. Her practice focuses on proven, research-tested methods for effectively navigating the everyday challenges of life with children.

    FREE with registration 510-647-1111 x 14.

Childcare available in Museum for $10/per child; $7.50 for siblings.

    Year-round Parent Support Group Program

Habitot's classroom annex is again available for on-going parent support group gatherings, meeting on weekday mornings, afternoons or evenings, from fall through spring, for a nominal fee.

Grants and other donations are being sought to continue our popular Caregiver Cafe's, teen parent groups, special times for special families, gatherings for homeless families and other vulnerable families. (Habitot's First 5 Alameda County grant was not re-funded this cycle).

For an additional charge, experienced parent educators can be contracted through Habitot's speakers bureau to lead discussions on topics of need/interest. Our Parenting Education staff can help you design a support program suited to your needs.

To receive email updates about Mamas & Papas, Caregiver Cafés, or to inquire about starting a new Parent-to-Parent Café, please contact us at 510-647-1111 x 16 or parented@habitot.org
