(Berkeley, CA) May through September 2007
Learn what you can do to protect young children from preventable accidents at Habitot Children’s Museum, which kicks off its 7th Annual Early Childhood Safety Campaign on Friday, May 11, 2007.

“Accidents are the #1 cause of injuries and death to children 1-6 years old and almost all are preventable!” according to the American Academy of Pediatricians.  Habitot's campaign is sponsored by State Farm Insurance for the seventh year in a row.

From May through September, Habitot will present a series of important early childhood safety events, trainings, and workshops to help families prevent accidents and injuries to young children. All events take place at the museum, unless otherwise noted, and are included free with admission.

  • Friday, May 11th from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm, Anna Griffin, EMT will demonstrate Choke Saving Skills in Spanish and English. According to one study, nearly two-thirds of the children who choked to death during a 20-year period were 3 years old or younger.
  • Friday, May 18th from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, parents and caregivers can learn about Toddler Helmet Safety, and purchase certified helmets for just $7.00. Helmets are required in California by anyone under 18 years while riding a cycle.
  • Saturday, May 19th from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, officers from the Berkeley Police Department and other enforcement agencies will conduct a Car Seat Safety Check in the Allston Way Parking Garage in downtown Berkeley. Inspections consistently show 4 of 5 car seats are installed incorrectly. Parking will be validated by Habitot and a free visit pass to the museum and other giveaways from State Farm are included.
  • Wednesday, May 23rd, from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm, Barbara Cheatham from the Safe Kids Coalition will present Water Safety tips. Toddlers drownings in bathtubs account for 40% of drowning incidents and the peak age for swimming pool deaths is 2 years.
