Volunteer Opportunities

Habitot Welcomes Volunteers

Our volunteers have assisted with art projects in the Art Studio, repainted and refurbished the museum, provided office support, worked on fundraising events, helped with mailings, solicited donations, and served on a task force or the board of directors. As with most non-profits, volunteers are essential to Habitot's viability. We look forward to meeting you. volunteer opportunities

  • Help sell books at Habitot book fairs

Adopt an Exhibit

Volunteer to supervise one of Habitot's exhibit galleries -- just two hours each week. Keep the water filled up in Waterworks ... staff the Infant-Toddler Garden so the littlest ones have a safe place to be...engage children in dramatic play in the stage area or order a meal in the cafe from one of our pint-sized restaurateurs. The job involves regular straightening so each exhibit space is inviting to entering visitors. Engaging children in play and learning and encouraging parent participation are our goals. We would like for each of Habitot's exhibit spaces to be supervised by a volunteer at all times. We need you!

Handy Helpers

Volunteers keep Habitot spiffy by re-painting, repairing exhibits, installing new elements, replacing light bulbs and cleaning exhibits and loose parts. Those with carpentry experience can provide specialized skills. We welcome everyone to our scheduled work parties. Join in the camaraderie of parents, young people, grandparents and others who care about young children and want to see Habitot shine.

Foster a Love for Art
One of the most active spaces at Habitot is the drop-in art center. Habitot tots are busy throughout the day painting on the wall, working with clay, sculpting, drawing and making a BIG MESS! Exploration of art materials is one of the most satisfying experiences for young learners and helps them develop self-expression. There are also important ways grown-ups can respond to young artists to encourage them. We offer a training program for volunteers in the art center who want to understand child development through art.

Family Resource Center & Toy Lending Library
Both the Family Resource Center and the Toy Lending Library have small but active groups of volunteers. Volunteers with good organizing skills or library experience help implement these important programs.

Parent Advisory Council
As a new museum serving families and young children, we need the advice of parents! Council members correspond through e-mail to review how Habitot is meeting its goals. Occasionally, you will be sent a written survey. We are hoping as many as 25 people will join this council for a one-year term.

Visitor Services
Volunteers with experience working with children can assist with visiting preschool field trips, classroom programs, and regular storytelling activities. Our year-round special programs -- family literacy nights, child safety events, seasonal and holiday celebrations like Halloween and Chinese New Year -- each need volunteers. Dramatic play exhibits like our new "Medical Center" exhibit need adults to spark play and learning among children and adults. Choose one event or activity a year, or volunteer on a regular basis.

Jr. Docents (8-12yrs.)
Older siblings of preschool-aged children who visit the museum with their families are invited to participate as Jr. Docents. They help young children in the museum use the exhibits safely and provide assistance to staff and adult volunteers. Jr. Docents earn community service points and qualify for prizes and special recognition.

Behind-the-Scenes
Provide general administrative support, help with mailings, pick-ups and deliveries, order supplies and materials or return phone calls. Be part of our office team -- pick a task you enjoy or do a variety of jobs. No contribution of time and energy here is too small!
