Summer Internships

Summer Camp ECE Intern

The Summer Camp ECE Intern works closely with the Lead Teacher and camp assistants to provide arts and play-based theme experiences for preschool aged campers in the Museum's classroom annex. Camps are limited to 12 children and take place in the mornings, 9-1, with camp prep beginning at 8:30 am. A minimum of 9 hours/week expected of interns as well as a final written report about lessons learned, challenges and successes. Stipend of $300 upon completion of 100 hours.

Intern Responsiblities

  • Help prep materials and room decorations for the weekly theme.
  • With direction and training, help supervise campers so they play safely, have clean hands before eating/cooking, participate in camp activities, make friends and have a positive experience.
  • Help campers plan and carry out their ideas.
  • Assist campers with transitions.
  • Assist campers with snack time, lunch and bathroom breaks.
  • As comfortable, lead games and play activities.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with young children in a home, camp or preschool setting.
  • Familiarity with art, cooking, and play activities appropriate for young children.
  • Be enrolled in a two or four-year college/university, or recent college graduate, with interest in education, psychology or related field.
  • Work well individually and as part of a team
  • Musical skill in voice, guitar, bass, or ukulele, or speaking another language, also a plus
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with children and adults.
  • MUST be able to work independently under direct supervision

Year-round Internships

Development Intern

The Development Intern assists with a variety of fundraising projects and activities. The internship is 3-months long, with a minimum of 9 hours/week expected. Stipend of $300 upon completion of 100 hours.

Intern Responsiblities

  • Write in-kind donation request letters
  • Solicit auction and raffle items
  • Research potential donors and sponsors
  • Update FileMaker database records
  • File donation reports
  • Assist with on and off-site donor cultivation and special events

Qualifications

  • Have an interest in fundraising, research, event planning, and/or non-profit organizations
  • Be a junior or senior at a four-year college/university, or recent college graduate
  • Have excellent writing and communication skills
  • Be proficient in Word, Excel, Internet in Mac environments
  • Be organized and efficient
  • MUST be able to work independently under direct supervision
Marketing Intern

The Marketing Intern supports communications and marketing efforts around events, activities, and fundraising.The internship is 3-months long, with a minimum of 9 hours/week expected. Stipend of $300 upon completion of 100 hours.

Intern Responsibilities

  • Write press releases and calendar listing announcements
  • Update media contact list
  • Staff booth/tables at community events
  • Maintain press clippings and in-house communications binders
  • Track event participation and update event binder
  • Assist with on and off-site donor cultivation and special events

Qualifications

  • Have an interest in media, communications, marketing, or PR
  • Be a junior or senior at a four-year college/university, or recent college graduate
  • Have excellent writing and communication skills
  • Be proficient in Word, Excel, Internet in Mac environments
  • Be organized and efficient
  • MUST be able to work independently under direct supervision
Graphic Design Intern

The Graphic Design Intern works under the direction of Habitot's graphics designer producing routine graphically designed publications. The internship is 3-months long, with a minimum of 9 hours/week expected. Stipend of $300 upon completion of 100 hours.

Intern Responsibilities

  • Update ads, event flyers, museum signage, invitations, announcements, calendars, stationery, business cards and others for print publication
  • Upload graphic files electronically
  • Maintain binders of graphically designed in-house materials

Qualifications

  • Have an interest in graphic design, art or marketing
  • Be a junior or senior at a four-year college/university, or recent college graduate
  • Have excellent writing and communication skills
  • Have knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator, Adobe, Photoshop, html, Internet and Mac environments
  • Be organized and efficient
  • MUST be able to work independently under direct supervision
Early Childhood Education Intern

Depending on experience, ECE Interns may assist in the Art Studio or with year-round classes for tots. Some interns have developed and implemented in-museum learning activities for visitors.Stipend of $300 upon completion of 100 hours.

Intern Responsibilities

  • Plan and prepare art, science, cooking, literacy or dramatic play activities for young children
  • Support lead teachers and assist in activities with children
  • Maintain educational materials in bins and in storage areas

Qualifications

  • Have an interest in early childhood education or art education
  • Be a junior or senior at a four-year college/university, or recent college graduate
  • Have excellent rapport with children
  • MUST be able to work independently under direct supervision
Community Partnerships Intern

Habitot Children’s Museum is seeking a Community Partnerships Intern to support its outreach and inclusion programs. For over 6 years, Habitot has partnered with more than 20 agencies and nonprofit organizations in the Bay Area to reach out to and include low-income and vulnerable families in museum programs and exhibits. These Family Engagement Programs offer free, exclusive visits and support to families with children 0-5, including children with special needs, homeless families, teen parents, formerly incarcerated mothers, LGBTQ families and immigrant caregivers. In the next two years, Habitot will be developing a working relationship with Alameda County’s Department of Children and Family Services to support family progress toward reunification.
The Community Partnerships Intern will work under the supervision of the Parenting and Community Partnerships Manager. This is a 100-hour internship, approximately 8-10 hours per week, for three months. $300 stipend.

Intern Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and follow-up for all museum visit programs, including set-up and clean-up, creating and distributing necessary forms and educational packets, and recording survey results.
  • Support staff in presenting off-site programs with community partners.
  • With guidance, interact with families in the museum setting, offering support to parents and facilitating learning opportunities to children.
  • Identify and communicate with existing and potential partners in the community, including educational settings, social service agencies, hospital-based programs, and other non-profit agencies.
  • Assist with database management and periodic communications with partners.
  • Aid in marketing and grant reporting by capturing photographs and video during events, collecting quotes and stories from participants, tallying observed behaviors.
  • Support curriculum development on topics such as child development, play, healthy & safety, and child nutrition.
  • Other duties as assigned and depending on strengths and interests.

Qualifications

  • Must have university-level academic preparation or experience in social work or family support programs
  • Have a passion for working with vulnerable families and children
  • Spanish speaking/translating ability desired
  • Flexible schedule, available to work some weekday evenings and weekends
  • Prefer some knowledge of child development and parenting strategies
  • Prefer someone with knowledge of the East Bay and the challenges local families are facing
  • Hard-working, compassionate and fun!
