Pizza Dough

As one of our companion programs for the Little Town Pizzeria play space, a pizza dough-making class may be offered again with interest. In the meantime, you can make this simple recipe at home:

Materials

  • 20 ounces bread flour (Costco sells organic bread flour)
  • 1 ½ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1  Tablespoon salt
  • 3 Tablespoons olive oil (optional)

Directions

  1. Mix yeast and water together in a 2 quart bowl, stir, and look for changes/bubbles. (Yeast is alive!)
  2. Add flour and salt (and olive oil if using) and blend in the bowl until the dough comes together as a ball. Take out and knead until smooth and elastic. If you have a standing mixer, you can use the dough hook and mix for 5-10 min.
  3. Cover dough and let it rise for 1 ½-2 hours.
  4. Divide dough into 4 equal pieces, flatten out each portion, lift the sides up and press them into the middle, turn the dough over and roll it into a tight ball.
  5. Let balls rest, covered loosely, for another 1 ½ hours.
  6. Stretch each ball into a pizza round, cover with your favorite toppings.
  7. Bake in a preheated 550 degree F oven for 6-10 min or until nicely baked. (A pizza stone, cast iron griddle, or baking sheet can be used. Semolina or cornmeal can be used to help slide the pizza easily from one surface (like a cutting board) onto the baking surface in the oven.)
