Birthday-in-a-Box Campaign!

Giving birthday parties to children living in family shelters

Your donations raised over $6,500 for Habitot’s Birthday-in-a-Box kits for family shelters in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Over 50 donors stepped forward to give 120 children a special birthday when they might not otherwise have had one. We’re so excited to be ordering supplies and putting together the first batch of kits. We’re filling tote boxes with Habitot art and play materials, activities and games, party favors, reusable decorations, and wrapped presents. Thank you for being a part of this campaign to make sure children living in family shelters are celebrated on their special day!

Help keep the program going! Can you imagine being a child, living in a family shelter and missing a birthday party on your special day? These children have lost so much — their homes, their playmates, their neighborhoods. Their birthday party shouldn’t be another thing they lose!

Since everyone knows we can’t welcome birthday party groups to Habitot right now, as we have in the past. One of our shelter partners remarked, “This is such creative idea – we love it and can’t wait to get our kit.”

We also want to recognize Cakes4Kids which will provide birthday cakes for all 120 parties these shelters will hold over the next year!

Here’s the list of confirmed shelters where we’ll be distributing kits:

  • Women’s Daytime Drop-in Center, Berkeley, Alameda County
  • Berkeley Food and Housing Project, Berkeley, Alameda County
  • Abode Services (formerly Tri-City Homeless Coalition), Fremont, Alameda County
  • Alameda/Solano County Roads Home & Team HOPE, Berkeley, Alameda County
  • Oakland Elizabeth House, Oakland, Alameda County
  • Love-A-Child Missions Homeless Recovery Shelter, Contra Costa County
  • SHELTER, Inc. of Contra Costa, Richmond, Contra Costa County

Waiting to hear back:

  • Greater Richmond Interfaith Program, Richmond, Contra Costa County
  • SHELTER, Inc. of Contra Costa – Concord, Contra Costa County
  • Central County Homeless, Concord, Contra Costa County

Now, we’re seeking matching funds for this campaign from local foundations who are impressed by how much we’ve raised from the community so far! Thank you again.

Upcoming Community Programs

We’re currently planning pop-up events in local parks (Berkeley, Richmond, and Oakland) with our mobile exhibits for summer/fall 2021, and temporary installations with our non-mobile exhibits in various venues. Sign up here for more information.

We build community by reaching out to and welcoming the most vulnerable children and families — those experiencing homelessness, foster and adoptive families, formerly incarcerated parents, children with special needs, teen parents, recent immigrants, and refugee families.
